Raised in Kingston, Ontario, Mike played for the Kingston "AAA" hockey association where his team won three straight championship titles before moving on to his OHL career. Mike later became the first-ever two-time OHL goaltender of the year and is currently tied in first with the best season save percentage in OHL history (.941%). Drafted to the NHL, Mike played professional hockey where he learned from top-end goalie coaches and teammates.
